ONE ELL OF A SAINT!, AS FISHER'S MAKE IT ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT
The opening fixtures of the 2009 Liverpool Champions League took place this weekend with some mouthwatering ties to be
watched by the numerous scouts descending on the magnificent surroundings at Ormskirks Edge Hill Sporting College.
Springfield Champions Fisher Athletic drew first blood when they accounted for Mags Youth with a double from White and
a wonderfully struck 20yrd free-kick from Robson. Last year's finalists, Mossley Hill, could only manage a 2-2 draw against
Rainhill with Murphy & James notching for the South Liverpool side, whilst Rainhill's Leadbetter & Mitchell the two
on target for the St Helens champions. In Group B, Ellison kept up his Golden Boot campaign with a brace against NWWL stunning
the crowds with a 30yrd thunderbolt whilst Martin finished off the game with the third 3-0. The final group match saw Rockcliffe
help keep his NAC Tigers team mates from losing their opening fixture when his equaliser helped NAC (1-1) with a share of
the points against double League Champions Eagle Cons (Scotland Road & Tuebrook winners).
u14s Group A & B (4th July)
Belle Vale 1-3 Burford, Swanside 5-1 Town Green, Allerton 1-1 Fur & Feather, Ormskirk WE
1-1 Diesel Boys
MILLER MAGIC, AS BURFORD BURST BELLE VALE BUBBLE!
The u14s section almost fell apart with less than 24hrs remaining, when first NWLL and then Breeze deciding to withdraw
from the competition. Two reliable clubs, Swanside & Ormskirk West End, came to the rescue and more importantly without
lowering the standards of the football being played, both relished the chance of entering at such a late stage.
The holders of the cup, Belle Vale, were on the end of a shock result when Edge Hill's (the Liverpool version near Wavertree)
champions, Burford, sprung one of the greatest shocks in the tournaments history by beating one of the favourites by 3-1.
Goals from Whittle, Spriggs & Jones proved too much on the day for McHugh's side and his solitary strike. Half the Swanside
team didn't even know about the tournament 48hrs previous, but they brushed aside the Craven Minor champions, Town Green (Holmes),
with a Miller hat-trick and a double from MoM Peers.
Fur & Feather survived under immense first half pressure from Allerton and ran out 2-1 winners with Powell & Basakapan
leading the line while Cox's single strike was not enough for last years finalists to register any points first time out!
The group was completed on Wednesday evening when Diesel Boys & Ormskirk shared the points with a 1-1 draw. Kenny's
opener being cancelled out by the Ormskirk striker McHugh's second half equaliser.
