Liverpool Champions League 2011 Finals

(Saturday 23rd July 2011)

The competition reached its climax in glorious sunshine which kept with the crowds until the final whistle was blown on the 10th year of the tournament.
It was a delight to see the players congratulating each other at the end of such a superb event, supervised excellently this year by the influx of firefighters, volunteering their time throughout the four weekends.
A special thanks must go to our four sponsors, Liverpool Mutual Homes, Arena Homes, Merseytravel and Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service who again, even in this time of hardship, chose to support the competition for the kids of Liverpool.

Whiston Juniors 2-1
Mossley Hill

Whiston took an early lead through RYAN McCALL within 5mins of the start of the game, this was quickly doubled a minute or two later thanks to JAMES HULME strike.  This gave the Rainhill champions an unassailable lead, and despite Mossley Hill pressure were just too strong on the day for the Merseyside&Halewood Champions.  Whiston's JOHNNY FOY collected the Player of the Tournament while ETHAN DWYER was unable to add to his tally of five before the final, received the Golden Boot.
Whiston were actually playing in their 50th final under their manager Mark Burke, so celebrations were in abundance come the trophy collection time!

Ash Celtic 1-0 South Liverpool

The Green & White hoops brigade were triumphant again for the second successive season beating arch rivals South Liverpool (formerly Burford) by an identical scoreline as last year.
This time it was TOLANI who was the toast of the Ash as he scored the only goal of the game, enabling his club to retain the coveted title of "Champions of Liverpool"

The Farmers  2-1  Quarry Green

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service took centre stage in this years event as they helped not just this age group but the entire 32 clubs for the four weekends feeding them with bottled water and distributing fruit to each of the players.
Tuebrook Champions, The Farmers were playing in their first ever Champions League final, having defeated the group winners Leighbridge on pens at the semi-final stage last week, had to come from behind in today's final to eventually lift the trophy which had eluded their club for so long.  Quarry Green were slight favourites for this one having defeated holders and Belle Vale Champions Netherley WLL in their semi-final.  They edged in front in this one through an excellent strike from Captain DARREN INSTONE, but were unable to increase their advantage and pressure from Farmers eventually took its toll when they first levelled the tie from a BRANDON GOUDIE strike with less than six minutes remaining, and then a free-kick on the far side of the pitch was floated into the danger area at the far post and DANIEL WHITE headed the winner passed the Quarry keeper for the Tuebrook side to go ecstatic at the final whistle seconds later.

The semi-final stages were reached last weekend in the tournament for Champions with all 16 teams eager to progress to next weeks finals, meeting each other head on for the bragging rights across the city.  As the competition reached its penultimate week the heavens opened but the football played on the pitch more than made up for the dismal conditions with some outstanding team performances.

WHISTON & MOSSLEY BOUNCE THEIR WAY TO FINALS
u11s semi-finals
The u11's highly contested section saw both group winners triumph in their semi-finals by identical scorelines.  Mossley Hill accounted for Woolton FC helped by strikes from TOMMY HANNAH, PHILLIP DEVENEY and ANDY JACKSON and look forward to meeting Rainhill Champions Whiston Juniors who can thank KYLE BLACKHURST, JOHNNY FOY and JOSH NUGENT for their triumphant performance against Walton & Kirkdale Champions Metcalf Kitchens.
u11s semi-finals
MOSSLEY HILL         3-0   WOOLTON DIAMONDS
WHISTON JUNIORS 3-0    METCALF KITCHENS

AFC GET IT WRIGHT TWICE, WHILE IT'S DEJA VUE FOR WOOLTON
u12s semi-finals
Beaten Finalists in 2010 TMS were favourites to avenge their defeat against Woolton Wanderers but AFC Liverpool had other idea's.  Another great match saw AFC power into the final with just 10mins remaining JOE WRIGHT slid the ball into the corner of the TMS net, the lead was doubled in the dying moments when JOE WRIGHT again hit the back of the TMS net and secured his side's progress into this years final.

The earlier semi-final saw a glut of goals with Woolton Wanderers taking an early two goal lead thanks to JAMES GALLOWAY and ALEX SCHULZ, Westpool halved the deficit before HARRY BLACKBURN restored Wooltons advantage before the break.  Wooltons MATTY GILL appeared to put the tie beyond the Westpool reach but the  "never say die" spirit was evident again in the Anfield Champions ranks as they brought the tie back to 4-3.  A cracking game for the football fanatic, but not one for the Manager!
u12s Semi-finals
WOOLTON Wanderers    4-3   WESTPOOL
TMS                               0-2   AFC LIVERPOOL

RICHARD THE THIRD RULES WOOLTON, AS CELTIC LOOK TO KEEP THE CUP
u13s Semi-finals
Saturday saw South Liverpool u13s (formerly Burford), having won their group in style, take control of their semi-final tie against close neighbours Woolton Diamonds, who just couldn't get going on the day.  A great individual display from South's centre forward, JOE RICHARDS, claiming the match ball with three splendid strikes help to catapult his side into their second consecutive
Champions league final.   Holders Ash Celtic found the going a little bit more tough against Bootle FC, they had to come from 0-1 to eventually overcome their opponents in probably the match of the day. Bootle's CONNOR WOODS broke the deadlock with only 10mins remaining but, this seemed to rally the Ash troops into another gear who quickly replied from CALLYM MOORE & TOLANI OMOTALA, the result was confirmed in the dying minutes when ELLIOT HUGHES lobbed the keeper from all of 35yards.  A repeat of last years final sees the Belle Vale league yet again provide both finalists in next weekends mouth watering encounter.
 u13s semi-finals
SOUTH LIVERPOOL  3-0   WOOLTON DIAMONDS
ASH CELTIC              3-1    BOOTLE FC

A ROCKY ROCKET UPSETS HOLDERS, AS BURKE SAVES THE DAY
u14s semi-finals
Sundays rainsoaked and windswept matches saw some hard fought displays battle their way through to this years finals.  In a fantastic u14s section, both matches saw the group runners-up overcome the group winners when firstly holders Netherley Wood Lane Legion were outfought by former Champions League winners Quarry Green (NAC Tigers).  BRANDON GROVES scored his second in as many days as he helped secure firstly qualification from the group in a solid 1-0 victory over Mossley Hill, then the opener against favourites NWWL.  STEPHEN ROCKCLIFFE made the finals a certainty when he unleashed a 25yrd bullet to the delight of the watching supporters.
The second semi-final saw another tough match with Farmers just edging it over Springfield Champions Leighbridge.  Even at the full-time whistle with the score at 1-1, plus 20mins extra time the teams could not be split, goals from Leighbridge's DAVID MEE and Farmers equaliser coming from SHAUN SMITH.  So it was left to the keepers to become the heros of the day and it turned out to be the Farmers keeper MICHAEL BURKE's MoM display with the Farmers winning in a 3-2 penalty success which gave the Farmers their first ever appearance in a Champions League final.  It was a delight to see each of the players from both teams shaking each others hands and wishing the victors success in next weeks final.
u14s semi-finals
NETHERLEY WLL  0-2  QUARRY GREEN
LEIGHBRIDGE        1-1  THE FARMERS
(Farmers win 3-2 on pens)

All the sponsors have been excellent this year with volunteers from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service becoming a great asset to this years competition.  All teams have been supplied with an ambundance of free bottled water and fruit on each day of the event with the complements of the MF&RS

The 10th year of the Liverpool Champions League kicked off on a glorious Summers day on the former schoolboy fields of Wayne Rooney at De La Salle College.  Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service were on hand with the distribution of free bottled water and fruit, re-inforcing their campaign for Healthy Eating, the pitches were ready and the supporters were keen for the tournament to get underway to discover which club is possibly the Best team in the area!

Group 11A
Mossley draw a blank in the Kitchen, whilst Formby get the Real thing
Metcalf Kitchens  0-0   Mossley Hill
Formby JSC        2-4   Real Vikings

The first u11s match produced an end to end classic goaless encounter, neither club able to break the deadlock due to some excellent custodial work and defending on both sides the match ended in a 0-0 scoreline despite some hair raising moments from the two title winning team of the Walton & Kirkdale and the Merseyside & Halewood junior leagues.  MoMs Andy Jackson (Mossley Hill) & Ben Hamlet (Metcalf Kitchens).

The second match in the group saw Real Vikings fire themselves to the league summit with a splendid 4-2 victory over Formby JSC.  A double each for Jack Dennigan and substitute James West  was too much for the Craven Minor Champions who despite some excellent football could only reply through Luke Warden & Joe Maybury.

Group 11B
Smith Double is two too many for Tricorn as Whiston & Crosby prove a point!
Tricorn Hotel      0-2   Woolton
Crosby Stuart     2-2   Whiston Jnrs

Ben Smith came off the bench to help his side claim three invaluable points with two strikes either side of the break.  Halton Champions Tricorn Hotel will be looking to better that result in their next champions league encounter with the support of their MoM Jack WardKieron Moran also impressing in the Woolton ranks.
A fiesty affair in the other group B match saw another end-to-end game with both teams settling for a point a piece, Rainhill Champions Whiston Juniors took the lead via a 25yrd Kyle Blackhurst screamer.  Crosby fought back well to draw level from Peter Fletcher strike and then putting their noses in front when Tom Cain was first to re-act from a re-bounded shot.  Whiston's late late equaliser was another close range tap in when Arron Murphy pounced to help his side gain a share of the spoils.

Group 13A
Birkdale point feels like defeat, while early South strikes hit Haydockers hard.
Bootle      2-2   Birkdale Utd
Haydock  1-6   South Liverpool

Birkdale's Kieran Sheen opened up the scoring with a fabulous 30yrd direct free-kick special to give the underdogs a more than deserved lead, two years previous in the same competition, Bootle had smashed the Craven Minor champions by 9-0, totally different story today!  James Howell eventually got the Bootle boys back level pegging but Gelling quickly restored the Birkdale advantage 2-1 with a well worked goal. Despite having a good amount of possession at 2-1, Birkdale were unable to convert a third goal and it was left to Karl Dale to get his boots in gear and slam the equaliser home before the final whistle.
South Liverpool fired in two in as many minutes against top Warrington side Haydock who found the going a little tough in their opening Champions League encounter against a really strong looking ex-Burford outfit and Champions from the Belle Vale league.  Doubles for Lee Jones & Joe Richards were added to by O'Reilly and Charlie Mock - Haydock's consolation strike coming from James Newton.

Group 13B
Ash cloud lifts over Widnes while Roberts treble gives Diamonds the edge!
Waterloo Park  0-4  Woolton Diamonds
Ash Celtic         2-0  Widnes Dragons

Holders of the Liverpool Champions League trophy had a dodgy looking start to this years campaign when newboys Widnes Dragons almost caught 2010 winners Ash Celtic cold, Widnes raced out of the blocks and pressured the Belle Vale outfit for vitually the opening 20mins.  Ash's luck held firm and a goal each from Tom Stevens & Tolani Omotola gave all three points on offer to the green & white crew.
Max Pye gave an impressive display in the Dragons ranks.

A superb hat-trick and MoM award for Liam Roberts helped his Woolton side to a great start over Hightown champions Waterloo Park, who failed to find their goalscoring boots on the hottest day on the year.  Dominic Burke completed the Diamonds scoring while Park's Rob Johnson picked up his teams MoM accolade.
